Bowlus Terra Firma

I bought the land that became home to Sajima Farm during the pandemic. It’s a woodlot. This means it’s a parcel of forested land — just trees. Initially, I lived in the back of my pick-up truck. I traded way up to a Bowlus Terra Firma camper.  For a year, my camper was essentially an extremely expensive tent due to the lack of any utilities. Eventually, I dug a well and installed electricity and internet. My beloved equipment shed was erected in 2023 and now houses my Bowlus, together with my tractor and other farm equipment.

Having spent a harsh Vermont winter outside without the benefit of any protection or heat, I decided to have my Bowlus serviced back in Oxnard, California, where Bowlus is based. I hired a delivery service to tow my camper from Vermont to California but decided to tow it back myself. I flew to California after attending my 35th college reunion in NJ. I had never towed a camper or anything else in my life, but I started with a solo cross country trip. I was terrified.  My fears proved well-founded, but I made it back in a week. I discovered that no rental company allows anyone to rent a pick-up truck one way or another. Due to requirements for renting a truck for towing a camper, I had to drive a 9-foot U-Haul box truck to tow my Bowlus. I stopped in Utah, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, Indiana, and New York.
